Flip-flop heels and skintight Lycra: it could only be Rihanna???s New York Fashion Week show
There"s no city quite like New York when it comes to ???hot ticket??? fashion shows. There"s Alexander Wang???s #wangfest, Philipp Plein???s ???girl gone bad??? with performances from Future and Dita von Teese, and Rihanna???s own fashion line, Fenty x Puma.On the Upper East Side, the queue for the latter wrapped round the block.
Twenty minutes later, I enter to find a mountainous pink sand dune.An upwards sloping black ramp on this pepto-pink moonscape is ominous - and rightly so, as three motocross riders did flips mid-air to open (and close) the show, now back in New York after a sojourn to Paris last season.Model of the moment Slick Woods was zipped in on the back of another back in the first look, a utilitarian navy vinyl jumpsuit with big plastic buckets.
Navy proved to be a key colour, in parachute jackets and trousers. But there was bright pink, too, in zip front vests and seat buckle belts.Motocross stripes and slogans marked skin tight Lycra, looser cargo trousers and even leathers.Neutrals of black and khaki were interspersed with fire-jacket orange and flashes of neon.
The trainers that you"d expect from Puma where there, but so to were heels, from skyscraper flip flops and ankle boots to wader-style thigh highs.
Athleisure is certainly morphing.A few years ago, vinyl and crop tops were the thing, but more thought goes into these go-faster stripes and padded jackets.
It was down to Rihanna???s friend, the Brazilian supermodel and Victoria???s Secret angel Adriana Lima to close the show wearing a zip-up catsuit in cobalt and lime with fuschia boots. But the main event, of course, is Rihanna herself- and she is not one to be outdone, even by her own shows. The superstar designer???s glory lap saw her ride around the show venue on the back of a motorbike, as you do.
