My greatest fashion buys of the year
January is a time of renewal:New year, new you, well hear 250 times a day from now until Valentines. (Yawn.)But its also about reflection, and I"m not above a little self-examination (of the sartorial kind, mind you – for something deeper, keep walking.)
So now seems a good time to muse upon what I wore this autumn in the hope that I can learn something from it andgoing forward, readers, improve upon it.
This season, darkness has returned to my wardrobe.I havent worn black head-to-toe for years, but somehow it kept popping up until it mono-polised (thats black for you).As a result, the green wool coat hasnt been worn once.Meanwhile, a black slim-cut Dagmar coat and a black and white waisted Edun coat with shearling collar (glamourama!) are flaunted shamelessly.
Edun shearling-trimmed cotton and wool-mix coat, £1,586, My Theresa
My Ports 1961 sleeveless navy coat with pom-poms (main picture) wins a stand-alone award for Most Complimented Garment Ive Ever Owned. It caused a woman in Pret to gasp and clutch my arm.I will be returning to this label. And to pom-poms.
Funnel neck jumper, £130,Folk
On constant replay have been two Folk funnel-neck rib knit sweaters in khaki and navy.Wide-cut with a raglan sleeve, theyre the most useful and reliable items I own.
Long-sleeved tops have replaced shirts (with the exception of a white mens Uniqlo one in XL).A loose crêpe navy Tibi top with a funnel neck and a black Ellery top with satin pockets have partnered an Isabel Marant chiffon skirt (black), which gets an airing at least once a week.
Cotton shirt, £19.90,Uniqlo
I like chiffon toughened up with boots, and thats where Churchs leather ankle boots (you know the colour) have come in for the second year running – quality lasts, people.
Leather boots, £380,Churchs
A surprise contender for occasion wear is the online label Atterley, which is brilliant at dresses.Im so besotted with the black satin Audrey dress that Im thinking of buying it in green too.Or, on reflection, maybe not.
Satin Audrey dress, £115, Atterley
Satin midi skirt, £1,274, Ellery at Matches
